As the new year begins, it is important to stay ahead of the new workplace trends. Modernizing hiring practices is a main focus of this new year and will improve a company’s ability to attract top talent in a competitive job market.

Here are five tips for modernizing hiring this year:

Use artificial intelligence (AI)

Instead of being intimidated by AI, use it to your advantage. AI tools can help employers review resumes, assess candidate qualifications, and even send tailored messages to candidates to help maintain communication throughout the process.

Consider utilizing AI tools to improve the candidate experience and streamline the tedious and timely tasks associated with the hiring process for employees.

Be mobile friendly

94% of job seekers use their smartphone to browse job listings. With most job seekers searching for jobs on their phone, consider making your application mobile friendly. Creating a mobile friendly application will increase the number of respondents and increase attraction to your company.

Be concise

On average, job seekers dedicate 14.6 seconds to reading through the requirements or qualifications of a job description. If they see too much information, then they are likely to skip to the next job listing.

When creating a job posting, it is important to keep it concise and add bullet points when possible. Job seekers want to find their information quickly and easily, and it has been discovered that job seekers prefer bullet points and short sentences over paragraphs of information.

Use SMS messaging

Use text messaging to schedule interviews or keep candidates updated on their application process. Many candidates prefer text messaging as the main source of communication over emails or phone calls. While text messaging is highly preferred, it can still be beneficial to ask candidates what the best way to reach them would be, as it may vary from candidate to candidate.

Change up the interview questions

Many candidates are familiar with the standard, “why do you want this job?” or “what are some of your weaknesses?” questions. These questions can be redundant for both employers and candidates

Rather than asking the same questions every interview, consider branching out and asking outside of the box questions. Here are some examples of unique questions to ask candidates:

  • Describe your career progression and what it says about you as a person.
  • Give an example of an unsuccessful project you have worked on, and how you would go back and make it successful.
  • Describe the type of work environment you would thrive in.
  • How would your co-workers describe you?
  • What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • What is one question you wished I had asked and why?
  • Do you prefer asking questions or figuring out things on your own?

Asking unique questions can help mix things up and give you various types of responses

It is important for leaders to stay up to date with hiring practices and trends. Falling behind on modern hiring practices can lead to a decrease in attraction and applicant responses. To stay competitive, consider implementing some of these hiring practices in your company.
